Today’s the big day!! It’s show and tell day for twenty designers who signed on to transform a room in six short weeks. It is the Fall 2018 One Room Challenge reveal. I am both nervous and excited to show you my space but mostly, relieved I finished.

 

Before I get to the photos I want to thank a few people. A big thank you to Linda of the One Room Challenge who invited me on this roller coaster of a ride for a second time. I don’t want to think that our master bedroom would still be looking like the before photos, but in all likelihood it might.  Another big thank you to all the generous sponsors who made my master bedroom design come to life. I am grateful for every product that was sent for my ORC transformation. Lastly, thank you to ORC media sponsor Better Homes and Gardens.

 

Since today is all about the after photos I want to give a shout out to my friend and photographer, Emily O’Brien. She pushed our scheduled Friday shoot out to Monday so that all my items could make it into my room. Emily then went above and beyond and edited all the photos that same day (late into the night) so I could have them in time to write this post.

If you have been following my One Room Challenge from the beginning then you know I chose to make over our master bedroom and adjoining master closet and bath. “Make over” is somewhat misleading because those spaces were never “made” in the first place. We had only been in our condo several weeks when the call came in to participate in the ORC. We were living in a pretty dismal state of clutter and mess so of course I jumped at the chance to create one fully decorated and finished space.

Since I did three spaces I am going to reveal each one separately, starting with the bedroom.

Master Bedroom Before

In order to refresh your memory, here are the very embarrassing before photos.Things were just plunked down where the movers left them and it was a hot mess.

There was no place to put the TV in our new living room so it ended up in the bedroom.

Drapes from our previous house with the pins balancing directly on the molding was my husbands attempt to block out a high powered spot light shining into the room.

The only positive thing I can think to say, is that it was so bad that no matter what I decided to do for the ORC would be an improvement.

I began my design with the beautiful Fabricut Margulies blue wallpaper and the Jane Churchill headboard fabric in Paradise Garden. My inspiration was the Kit Kemp designed Fermdale hotels which are full of patterns and color yet peaceful at the same time. I am so happy with how it turned out and I have to pinch myself that this is now my bedroom.

It is so nice to have a reading/relaxing area in the bedroom. The walnut and steel book cases from Article are perfect on either side of the chairs. It’s been almost two years since I’ve had a place to display my favorite books and accessories.

When styling the bed with pillows I started with three 26″ x 26″ pillows from Arianne Belle.

Next I layered in the two king pillows that came with the Blue and white gingham sheet set from Roostery.

 

Finally I added two custom queen pillow shames and one bolster pillow.  Two standard pillow shams:  Fabricut Devon fabric with Jonah trim Bolster pillow: Jane Churchill Lucas fabric for Cowtan and Tout.

Do you recognize the yellow framed art over the nightstands? Those are the frames from the ugly art I bought at the habitat restore. I painted them a happy yellow and and I created the art with my iPhone.

In an earlier post I shared that our ceilings are only slightly over 7′ high. Metrie had the perfect solution and this particular molding tricks the eye into believing the ceilings are taller than they are. Most of what you see with this molding is on the ceiling not on the wall.

I honestly have few words to explain the dismal state of our closet. My only excuse is that the builder basic closet did not function for our needs. We needed drawers and there were only shelves.

Building the closet was my husband’s project. He ordered the cabinets online and two weekends later we had a beautiful new closet with much needed drawers.

I love our new semi flush chandelier. It makes me feel so elegant every time I walk in the room. It is the Broche semi flush from Crystorama The color and texture relates to the Nantucket baskets and the gold trim on the top of the chair.

Other than the new bookcases from Article, our condo has no place to display collectibles. Now that we have plenty of drawers for our clothes, I decided to use the shelves to display personal treasured objects. Every item on the shelves has a special meaning of significance. The Humpy Dumpy egg was a Christmas gift from my husband when we were first dating! The piggy bank above it I have owned since childhood.

To add some color I used a couple pieces of art from Minted. The piece on the top is  Architecture of Flow by melanie mikecz . The one in the middle is Blue Agave by Amanda Phelps

The closet system came with cheap hardware so I ordered the sleek Satin nickel hardware from ORC sponsor Schuab. Silver storage boxes from ORC sponsor Couture Lamps

Master Bathroom Before

As I had previously shared, I like the bones of the master bathroom. What I didn’t like, or get a say in when they were building our unit, were the fixtures. Since I was improving the master bedroom and closet I decided to take the opportunity to upgrade the fixtures. I chose new  sconces, hardware, faucets and shower heads.

Upgrading the fixtures has made such a difference in the bathroom. It went from nice to wow! The new wall sconces are the Pella in antique silver from Crystorama .They are a thousand times nicer than the builder basic sconces we originally had. The circular design looks great with the movement of the marble. The walls also got a new color: Benjamin Moore Perspective. I chose a green blue to work with both the marble and the color of the cabinetry.

Another upgrade that makes me so happy are the new Metropol faucets from ORC sponsor Hansgrohe. The polished chrome looks much better with the cool toned marble counter top than the previous warm tone satin nickel. The clean contemporary lines are also more in tone with the look I wanted.

Shay Geyer of IBB Design, who is also one of the twenty featured designers, sent the orchid from her online store. Our bathroom is an inside room so there is no natural light. I love a plant in the bathroom to soften all the hard surfaces and a faux plant was my only choice. This orchid is so realistic looking it’s virtually impossible to tell it is faux.

I chose one more piece of art from Minted to coordinate with an existing watercolor. It is Dawn Light by Lise Gulassa

One of the sponsors of the ORC this Fall was Couristan Carpet. Unfortunately I couldn’t find a rug that would work in the bedroom but they sent me a small sample of one of their new indoor outdoor rugs and it looks great in the bathroom. You can see it peaking out in the photo below. It’s very soft and since it’s inside/outside I don’t have to worry about water.

Remember the story of my struggle finding a hardware replacement for an odd C to C measurement? These Luminere pulls and knobs from Schuab worked out perfectly. As it turns out the Lucite rods were adjustable. We carefully shortened the C to C by a fraction of a centimeter and there was no need to drill new holes.

The new shower system from ORC sponsor Hansgrohe has made both my husband and I very happy.  He has his big rain shower head and I have my Chroma Select hand unit. They are both attached to the Chroma SAM pole.

A new Emtek towel ring and matching Emtek  30″ towel bar are so much nicer than the origional builder grade. The biggest problem with the origional towel bar is that is was too small at only 22″ wide. The towels were never able to fully dry because they were bunched up on one another. Now they sit side by side with plenty of room to dry.

I also upgraded from an over the door hook to this beautiful Emtek chrome door hook. It is like a little sculptural delight behind that door.

Emtek also provided an upgrade on our door knobs with these round knobs with a rectangular back plate. It’s one more small detail that elevates the whole feeling of luxury in the room.

The final two images are items I purchased from my recent trip to High Point Market. These pretty botanical prints are from Lo Forti Fine Prints. They were so kind to put a super rush on my order so that they would arrive in time for my photo shoot. They arrived just in the nick of time!

I forgot to have Emily take a close up of my Egyptian Water Lily so I took this one this morning. It is from Bliss Studio and has a perfect spot on my bedside table.

 

Wow! That was a lot of photos. I think I covered everything and am happy to say, that’s a wrap on the Fall 2018 One Room Challenge.

I’m so excited to see all the other designer’s reveals.There have been some very ambitious undertakings and some nail biting setbacks. Fingers crossed everyone finished.
